BLUEFIELD -- Cabell Midland senior Mark Patton carried the Knights on his shoulders to the top of the mountain in Class AAA basketball earlier this month.

Patton, a 6-foot-9 senior who has already committed to Marshall, helped the Knights beat top-ranked South Charleston, 61-54, and a talent-laden class of seniors went out as champions.

Patton finished with a game-high 29 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, dished out four assists, had five blocks and one steal. The senior on Sunday was named captain of the Class AAA all-state team by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

For the season, he averaged 20.4 points per game.

Six seniors and a pair of juniors make up the first team.

South Charleston's Cedric Hornbuckle joins Patton. The senior averaged 20.3 points for the Black Eagles.

Martinsburg's Kevin Pittsnogle, who has committedto West Virginia, scored 21 points per game. The 6-10 senior led the Bulldogs back to the state tournament. Martinsburg did not lose a regular season game to any school in West Virginia.

Princeton's 6-8 senior pivotman Daniel Reed earned honors as well after leading the Tigers to their first sectional tournament win over rival Woodrow Wilson since 1989. He averaged 22.2 points.

The other two seniors were Riverside's Karl Booker, who led the Warriors into the state semifinals and averaged 20.5 points, and Elkins standout Nick Patella, who averaged 22 points and 11.5 rebounds, and more than eight assists.

Parkersburg South junior Matt Shamblin averaged 22 points per game and nearly led the Patriots to an upset victory over South Charleston in the opening round of the state tournament.

Rounding out the first team is Spring Valley junior Brandon Moore, who averaged 18.2 points per game. Cabell Midland kept Spring Valley from earning a state tournament berth.

The second team is captained by Fairmont Senior's Will Bridges, who averaged 15 points per game.

Sophomore Matt Estepp of Greenbrier East was the only non-senior on the second team. He averaged 17 points.

Hurricane's Brandon Halstead was the top scorer among second team selections at just over 20 points per game. Others on the second team were Preston's Tommy Hooten, Parkersburg's Pat Hudkins, Logan's John Ryan Steele, Princeton's Kory Hedrick, and Morgantown's Bobby Prim.
