The Morgantown High boys' basketball team was a quarter away Saturday from making the statement that it was ready to join the state's elite teams.
Eight minutes later, the Mohigans were just another victim of Martinsburg.
The Bulldogs, led by WVU recruit Kevin Pittsnogle's 27 points and 13 rebounds, outscored the Mohigans, 24-11, in the fourth and pulled off a 73-65 victory.
"We just couldn't get our shots to drop in the fourth quarter," MHS coach Tom Yester said. "We had some good looks, but missed our 3-pointers. We had them for most of the game, but give Martinsburg credit, because they never gave up."
The Mohigans (7-2) took a 19-18 advantage late in the first and led until four minutes to go in the fourth.
"Our boys have been down before," Martinsburg coach Dave Rogers said. "These boys will never give up. They will go to war with each other."
Martinsburg is 8-2, the defeats coming in a tournament at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
"We've played well so far this season," Yester said. "I think the boys still wondered if they could hang with the big boys. I think they found out today that the answer is yes."
MHS earned the early lead with its running game and good outside shooting and by grabbing every rebound.
"We just went out and played our game," said MHS forward Ronnie Shaver, who led the Mohigans with 15 points and 13 rebounds. "We knew they were one of the best teams in the state, but we didn't let them intimidate us. We came out hot and kept the pressure on them."
Until the fourth quarter.
"I think we got a little tired," Shaver said. "We just didn't make our shots. It was frustrating, because we were right there with them and we let it slip away."
Justin Vidovich and Nick Hedges each scored 14 points for MHS and Seth Fogarty added 11. Hedges also had eight rebounds.
In other games:

* North Marion won a free-throw shooting contest in the overtime to seal a 63-62 victory over Preston, at Rachel.
Preston's Steve Adams scored a basket late in the fourth quarter to send the game to OT. But, the Huskies (6-1) went 10-of-12 from the line in OT while Preston was 6-of-6.

Statler led C-B with 15 points.
