Mohigans Move up One Place In Latest Statewide Poll
The Morgantown Mohigans moved to eighth place in the latest statewide
AP poll. This despite a loss last week to the 3rd ranked Polar Bears
of West Fairmont, and the fact that the local media does not vote
in this poll. The computer Metro Index poll will be out Wednesday.
Last week MHS was ranked 5th in that poll. Morgantown has played
one of the state's toughest schedules and will finish the season
with many home games at the MAC. MHS will host Buckhannon on Wednesday
and travel to UHS on Friday.

If you happen to see last week's MetroNews Power Index, chances
are, you already know what this weeks looks like.

The top seven teams remain the same as last week with Cabell Midland
holding the top spot followed by undefeated Fairmont Senior at two
with a 16-0 record.

Martinsburg, South Charleston, and Morgantown round out the top five.

Here's a look at 2002 rankings.
Metronews High School Basketball Power Index

Metro Poll Tabs Mohigans at #3 in State
The Metro news power index poll rated the Mohigans at number three
in the state in its first poll of the season. Cabell Midland and
West Fairmont were number one and two. The rest of the poll can
be viewed, below. MHS will host #10 Brooke on Friday, then #6 Martinsburg
on Saturday. The Metro poll uses a combination of strength of schedule
and wins to calculate the leaders. This is the same poll that is
used in the football playoff system. The other poll used in the state,
the AP poll, is voted by sports writers. The local paper, historically
does not vote in the AP poll, therefore, local teams rarely do well
in it.

02/27/2002 Mohigans Jump To No. 1 In Power Index

The regular season for boys'high school basketball season in the state of West Virginia has been completed, and with it comes the final release of the Metronews Power Index. The final PI sees a shakeup at the top. In the previous seven Power Index releases, only two schools -- Cabell Midland and Fairmont Senior -- had held the No. 1 position. But fresh off its victory over then No. 1 Fairmont Senior last week, Morgantown High, which had been No. 3, jumped up to the top rating. The Mohigans take an 11-game winning streak into sectional tournament play, which begins this week on the boys' side. Morgantown and Fairmont Senior, which have split their two previous meetings this year, appear headed for a third showdown in the regional finals, and a trip to the state tournament in Charleston will be at stake. Cabell Midland wound up second in the final addition of the PI, while Fairmont Senior was third. Martinsburg is fourth, but the 18-4 Bulldogs have not lost to a team in the state of West Virginia this year. South Charleston is fifth. At No. 6 is the highest rated Class AA team. Tug Vally lost for the first time this season, falling to Oceana last week, but Tug remains highest among the three AA teams in the top 10. Wyoming East is No. 9 and Bridgeport is No. 10. Parkersburg Catholic maintains its spot as the top ranked Class A squad, as the Cruasaders at No. 15. Sectional action will take place across the state this week, and regional play will held next week. Then the eight remaining teams in each of the three classes will gather at the Charlesotn Civic Center for the State Tournament, which will run March 13-16.
