High School Athletes of the Week

Tyler Benson

Morgantown's Tyler Benson averaged 21 points a game last week in victories over state-ranked North Marion and Brooke. Against Brooke, Benson hit eight 3-pointers in the second half and scored 30 points.

Joanna Joseph

In leading 4thranked Morgantown to victories over Parkersburg and Elkins, sophomore guard Joanna Joseph totaled 35 points and six 3-pointers. Joseph leads the area with 23 3-pointers this season, averaging 14.3 points a game.

Honor roll

Boys' basketball

* In leading Clay-Battelle to a victory over No. 8 Weirton Madonna, Beau Wilson scored 35 points and added 11 rebounds. In a 55-44 victory over Hundred, Wilson scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds and 12 assists for a triple-double.

* In two games last week against Fairmont Senior and Buckhannon-Upshur, University High's Casey Jackson totaled 37 points.

* Trinity's Brian O'Neil scored 64 points in three games last week.

Girls' basketball

* Trinity High's Sarah Miller averaged 17.3 points a game last week. Miller scored 28 in a loss to Notre Dame.

* Clay-Battelle's Jenna Toothman averaged 17.5 points on the week with a highlight of 22 points in a 53-43 victory over South Harrison.

Swimming

* In two dual meets against John Marshall and Robert C. Byrd, Morgantown High's Josh Stone won the 100-yard breaststroke twice and also took first place in the 200 freestyle and the 200 individual medley. Teammate Austin Temple also took first in the 100 freestyle twice. Bret Jackson took first place in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. Justin Ryu also took firt place in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle.

* For the MHS girls, Maria Nepa won the 100 backstroke twice, while Frankie Temple won the 100 butterfly twice.

Wrestling

* In a tri-match with Fairmont Senior and Northern High (Md.), University High's Kyle Turnbull (112), Matt Earle (119), Shawn Hefner (125), David Coon (171) and Matt Thompson (189) all went 2-0.

* In a quad match with North Marion, Buckhannon-Upshur and Elkins, Morgantown High's Lucas Cappas (112) and Jared Garvin (119) both went 3-0.
