The No. 4-ranked Morgantown High boys' basketball team wanted to find out how good it was.

The Mohigans found out Tuesday.

They're pretty good.

In a dazzling display of defense, rebounding and overall team play, MHS won the Mohigans Coaches Against Cancer Tournament with a 70-57 victory against fifth-ranked South Charleston.

"We got outrebounded by a smaller team (Monday night), but we came back and played tough on the boards tonight and that was a major factor in the game," MHS coach Tom Yester said. "I don't know what the difference was, but it had to be more than 10, and when you can get that you've got a good chance to win the game, especially when you get a lot of offensive rebounds."

The Mohigans (4-0) outrebounded the Black Eagles (4-1), 45-20, with Kameron Law grabbing 13 and Chris Carey getting 10.

The Mohigans also were able to break the Black Eagles' full-court pressure and kept South Charleston's guard combo of Ronnie Means and Klint Frazier in check.

In a 100-60 victory against Wheeling Park, Means and Frazier combined for 10 3-pointers and 46 points. Against the Mohigans, they connected for just five 3-pointers and 19 points.

It was a clean sweep for the Mohigans on this day, as the No. 2-ranked MHS girls' team won the championship with a 78-60 victory against Chartiers Valley (Bridgeville, Pa.).

The MHS girls (8-0) changed their lineup, starting senior Junele Lewis for the first time this season at center. Lewis responded with 12 points and seven rebounds.

About the only noteworthy portion of the game came when MHS point guard Rebecca Bonasso picked up her fourth foul, which moved Keri Pryor to the point.

"I really don't mind playing the point, I'm sort of used to it from last year," said Pryor, who finished with 24 points. "I'd rather not play it. I'm going to have to start getting on Rebecca so she'll stop getting in foul trouble."

Brittany Drake came off the bench to score 11 points for the Mohigans and Lisa Lovett added five points and eight rebounds.

"I thought we got off to a tremendous start," coach Allan Collins said. "I thought Junele came in and played a terrific game for us and so did Brittany Drake. In another situation, we probably would have moved Lisa Lovett to the point instead of Keri, but we were having some trouble with their pressure.

"Overall, I thought it was an outstanding performance by a quality team."

Chartiers Valley (9-3) was led by Lauren Revesz, who has signed to play at Ohio University. Revesz scored 17 points and added seven rebounds.

The MHS boys, who hit the 70-point barrier in a game for the first time this season, proved without a doubt that they belong in the elite status in the state, as they led from start to finish.

Tyler Benson got MHS off to a good start by scoring 11 of his 15 points in the first half. Carey picked up the slack later, scoring 16 of his 21 points in the second half. Law finished with 12 points, showing his ability to score inside, as did Ben Torsney, who finished with 11 points.

"The one thing we needed was more scoring from the inside," Yester said. "We got it tonight with Kameron and Ben and then Carey and Benson started driving to the basket.

"We played at a controlled tempo. We took our breaks when we had them, but we didn't want to get in a running match with them."

In the consolation games, Laurel Highlands (Uniontown, Pa.) defeated East Fairmont, 60-54, to take third in the girls' tournament. The Fillies were led by Lauren Mahoney, who scored 13 points. Anne Marie Murray scored 18 for East Fairmont.

In the boys' consolation, No. 6 Wheeling Park (2-1) beat Atholton High (Columbia, Md.), 53-45. The Patriots were led by Brad Kouski's 14 points, while Jonas Viekuss scored 20 for Atholton.
