Hawks boys, girls earn tight victories

The Dominion Post
ELKINS — L.C. Jefferson tallied 21 points, including two crucial free throws with 11 seconds to play, and University High tuned up for Thursday’s city showdown with Morgantown High by upending Elkins, 52-50, in boys’ basketball Tuesday.
The Hawks owned a 40-33 lead after three quarters and made 11 of 15 free throws in the fourth to hang on.
“We controlled the tempo of the game and got it where we wanted to,” UHS coach Bruce Clinton said. In the fourth quarter, “we spread the floor and made them come and get us.”
University also made sure to hang on to the ball. “We had maybe 10 turnovers the whole game, and probably six of them were in the first quarter,” Clinton said. “We really took care of the ball, even with all the pressure (Elkins) applied.”
Jedd Gyorko backed Jefferson with 15 points.
Tyler Phares had 14 to top the Tigers. In other boys’ games: BUCKHANNON — John Oliver poured in 22 points, sinking 5 of 8 3-point attempts, and Marlan Robinson added 20 points to pace Morgantown High past Buckhannon-Upshur, 78-66. “Oliver just had an all-around hot night,” MHS coach Tom Yester said. “The kids recognized it and found him.” Much of the credit for that could go to Dusty Kerns, who had 11 assists. Robinson, Yester said, had a “wonderful night,” with six rebounds and four assists to go with his 20 points. Chris Carey added 12 points for the Mohigans, who slowly pulled away from the Bucs throughout the game. Yester also credited the combination of Quinn Law and Andrew Dunn, who played the post for MHS and between them contributed nine rebounds and 12 points. Ben Dobberstine led B-U, with 26 points. LOST CREEK — Grant Neely scored 20 points, Danny Webster 14, and Trinity sank 9 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off South Harrison, 52-45. South Harrison trailed, 39-32, after three quarters but whittled the Warriors’ lead to three. That’s as close as it got, though, and when South Harrison had to foul, Trinity made the free tosses. HUNDRED — Travis Neely scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half to rally Hundred past Clay-Battelle, 59-51. Neely also had 10 rebounds in the game, Bobby Devaul added 21 points and Brandon Kimble tossed in 11 for the Hornets, who trailed, 26-20, at the half. Jason Thomas and Austin Ponceroff scored 13 apiece for the Cee-Bees.

Girls’ basketball
WHEELING — Angela Scotchel scored 23 points and Tarenna Dixon 18, and University High held off Wheeling Park, 65-61. The Hawks broke from an 11-all first quarter and led, 33-27, at halftime, a margin they maintained after three quarters. “The second half was back-and-forth the whole way,” UHS coach Kamela Meikle said. In the fourth quarter, “For the longest time we were up, 60-59. They made three big runs at us and we made three big stops. Then in the last 1:10 we held the ball and it came down to foul shooting.” The Hawks, just 10-of-19 for the game, made those free throws when they counted. Blair Bradley added 11 points, and Dixon and Kim Toler “were huge on the boards for us,” said Meikle, who figured the two each reached double figures in rebounds. She also noted the play of freshman Kayla Strimel. “She stepped up and played good defense and got key rebounds late in the game.” Maggie Gompers led four Wheeling Park players in double figures, with 18.
