Carey too hot for Polar Bears

Career-high 31 lead MHS rout

BY JOSH STROPE The Dominion Post

Thursday’s game between Morgantown and Fairmont Senior showcased two of the top players in the NCAC, the Mohigans’ Chris Carey and Dane Cimaglia, of the Polar Bears.
While the two made it hard for the NCAC to determine the player of the year, the Mohigans (17-4) made sure to let everyone know who is the best in the conference, beating FSHS, 76-58.
Carey scored eight field goals and went 13-for-15 from the line to give him a career-high 31 points.
Cimaglia was just about the only offense the Polar Bears (4-18) had, scoring 26 points, almost half of their total.
For Cimaglia, it was Senior Night, and the sharpshooter was on fire. This forced MHS coach Tom Yester to look down his bench to John Hatfield to put the clamps down.
“Dane got his points, but he sure didn’t get them on John,” Yester said.
Hatfield played aggressively on Cimaglia, often not allowing him to get his hands on the ball, let alone get off a shot.
After a slow first quarter, the Mohigans caught fire in the second, scoring 22 points and taking a 37-21 lead into halftime.
Not wanting to be embarrassed, the Polar Bears came out of the intermission with a chip on their shoulders and started the third quarter with a 13-2 run.
Fairmont Senior got as close as 47-44, but Carey stepped up and drained a shot from beyond the 3-point arc.
After that, the Mohigans caught fire once again, scoring 29 points in the final quarter to seal the deal for the No. 7 team in the state.
“We weren’t consistent tonight, and we made a few more turnovers than we usually made,” Yester said.
While Carey had a big night, the rest of the Mohigans struggled on their shots. Marlan Robinson was the only other MHS player in double figures, with 14.
The Mohigans close out the regular season Saturday night, against Parkersburg South.
