Mohigans blow out Bucs, 73-54

The Dominion Post
BUCKHANNON — Jeff Lindsay scored 16 points, and Morgantown shot to a 23-9 lead after a quarter and ran away from Buckhannon-Upshur for a 73-54 boys’ basketball victory Wednesday.
“Shot” is the operative word. The Mohigans were 27-of-47 from the field (57 percent) in burying the Bucs.
“We were in control, played a pretty good game,” MHS coach Tom Yester said. “We shot the ball well. John Hatfield had six assists and J.T. Lewis five. Both passed the ball extremely well, got us a lot of shots.”
Jamie Karraker had 11 points to go with four rebounds for MHS.
Elliott Law grabbed five boards, and Lewis and Jay Fletcher four each.
B-U’s Luke Hyre led all scorers with 23 points, but had 13 of them in the fourth quarter, when MHS began resting its starters, “so it looks a little better for them than it was,” Yester said. “Everybody got a chance to play, we got a little rest.”
Morgantown plays host to Fairmont Senior on Friday for Senior Night.

BROOKE — Jamie Karraker came off the bench to score 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including two big free throws with 16 seconds to play, as Morgantown High edged Brooke, 57-54, in boys’ basketball Friday.
“It was a nice win,” MHS coach Tom Yester said. “Brooke is really tough to beat there.”
The Bruins look especially tough in the first quarter, racing to a 9-2 lead. Jimmy Reitter scored 12 of his 14 points in the period, which ended with Brooke ahead, 16-13.
We came back and played pretty good defense in the second quarter,” Yester said, and with Jeff Lindsay netting nine of his 16 points, the Mohigans held a 26-22 lead at the half.
“The second half,” Yester said, “we stopped Reitter but they found [Jay] Lyonette, he had 16 of his 18 points in the half.”
The Mohigans countered with Karraker, who wound up leading them in scoring. Lindsay added five assists, John Hatfield four assists and eight rebounds, and Cameron Taylor five boards.
“Everybody gave us a little bit of something,” Yester said.
KINGWOOD — “It was the best ballgame I’ve ever watched from the bench in the second half,” Preston coach Barry Sanders called it, after watching his Knights rally from a 29-19 halftime deficit to beat Lincoln, 57-50 in overtime.
Josh Adams scored five of his 17 points in the overtime, and Trapper Jennings added 14 points to boost the Knights to victory.
“It was just an outstanding shooting night for us,” Sanders said. “We shot 78 percent from the floor [7-of-9] in the third quarter and ended up 10-of-16 for the second half. We hit six of our seven 3-pointers in the second half. Zach Wotring hit two big 3s for us in the fourth quarter.”
Sanders also lauded his team’s “great defensive effort in second half, we held ‘em to 21 points in the half and the overtime. Drew Dupont ended up with five blocks, which was big for us.
“It was a great team win.”
Eli Cottrill led Lincoln, with 18 points.

MHS edged by Wheeling Park 2/5/06

WHEELING — Morgantown’s Jeff Lindsay saw his last-second shot fall short and Wheeling Park held on for a 66-64 victory against the No. 7 Mohigans.
Lindsay scored 18 points for MHS (12-4). Cameron Taylor and Jamie Karraker each added 12 points.
“Hopefully, it was a coming-out party for Cameron Taylor,” MHS coach Tom Yester said. “We had much better offense from a number of players, which is what we needed, and Cameron was one of them.”
The Patriots held a 15-9 lead after a quarter and had two different leads of 11 points, but Yester said the Mohigans wouldn’t quit.
“We didn’t fold up the tents,” Yester said. “We continued to play hard and that’s what you like to see as a coach.”
The Mohigans nailed six 3-pointers for the game, but shot just 34 percent overall (24-of-70). They were able to stay in it with defense and by forcing turnovers. While Wheeling Park (7-10) shot 53 percent, the Patriots were able to get off just 47 shots.
“You never like to lose,” Yester said, “but I saw a lot of progress in the game.”

MORGANTOWN 68 FAIRMONT SENIOR 48
MHS defense cools off hot Polar Bears
Robinson (25), Mohigans pull away eventually
BY RYAN MCNEIL The Dominion Post

Morgantown boys’ basketball coach Tom Yester warned his team that Fairmont Senior, missing two starters because of injury, would look for a hot start.
Yester’s prediction proved correct as the Polar Bears trailed only 19-18 after the first quarter of Friday’s game.
However, the Mohigans picked up their defensive intensity in the final three quarters and rolled to a 68-48 victory.
“I told the kids Fairmont Senior would come out fighting and they did,” Yester said. “Our team lives off of good defense. I thought we did a real good job [on defense] after the first quarter.”
Marlan Robinson led all players with 25 points. The 6-foot-5 senior also added seven rebounds and two assists.
But what impressed Yester most about Robinson was a play that won’t show up on the stat sheet.
“Marlan played real well,” Yester said. “The best thing he did tonight was take a charge.”
The Polar Bears were missing two starters — Jay Carpenter and Jason Gallagher — due to injury and the Mohigans’ depth was too much for Fairmont Senior to handle.
With the Polar Bears’ defense focusing on Robinson and point guard Jeff Lindsay, Jamie Karraker came off the bench for Morgantown and hit five 3-pointers to finish with 15 points.
“If [Karraker] isn’t the best 3-point shooter around, then I don’t know who is,” Yester said. “He can drill it. We are starting to get him some more playing time.”
Sophomore Zachary McCullough, starting in place of Gallagher, led Fairmont Senior (4-7), with 13 points. Ben Kettering added 11 rebounds and seven points.
The intensity picked up in the second half as the Mohigans started to pull away. Midway through the third quarter, Lindsay stole a pass on the wing and sprinted down the court where he was fouled hard on a layup attempt.
An intentional foul was called on the Polar Bears.
A few minutes later, in the fourth quarter, Robinson was hacked hard by Leon Maddox on a breakaway. Robinson got up in Maddox’s face and both players were whistled for technicals.
Later, the Fairmont Senior bench was whistled for another technical after an assistant coach yelled at a referee.
Yester said he was pleased his team was able to keep its composure in the second half and hold on for the win.
“We tried not to get into that stuff in the second half,” Yester said. “We have some volatile kids of our own.”
John Hatfield led Morgantown with five assists. The senior added four rebounds and five points.
“He did a lot of things well tonight,” Yester said.

Robinson (26), MHS show Monarchs who’s king, 59-46
The Dominion Post
MOUNDSVILLE — Marlan Robinson poured in 26 points, including all six of Morgantown High’s free throws, and added 12 rebounds as the Mohigans overcame a scorching start by John Marshall and went on to a 59-46 boys’ basketball victory Friday.
The Mohigans trailed, 19-17, after a quarter before asserting themselves.
“First quarter, they came out on fire,” MHS coach Tom Yester said of the Monarchs. “They shot 8-for-13, so we were just doing good to stay close. I think the rest of the game they ended up 19-for-50, so we did a pretty good job defensively after that.”
The Mohigans rallied to a ninepoint lead at halftime, maintained it through three quarters, and, “We did nice job at the end just keeping our composure, spreading the floor,” Yester said.
Jaime Karraker chipped in with 14 points and five rebounds, and Jeff Lindsay had 12 points and three assists. John Hatfield added six rebounds, seven assists and three steals, “so we had some nice contributions,” Yester said.
Sean Freeland led the Monarchs, with 11 points.

13 score as MHS eases past Elkins 1/8/06
The Dominion Post
ELKINS — All 13 Mohigans players scored as Morgantown High coasted past Elkins, 73-37, Saturday, in an NCAC boys’ basketball game.
The Mohigans struggled a bit in the first half, leading by just eight at halftime, but quickly put the game away after that.
“We came out in the third quarter and jumped on ‘em pretty good,” MHS coach Tom Yester said. “That put it away and we played the young kids the rest of the way.
“The big things in second half were, we played pretty good defense, and we had two turnovers.”
On a night of lucky 13s, Jeff Lindsay and Marlan Robinson led the Mohigans with that many points apiece. J.T. Lewis collected seven rebounds, John Hatfield seven assists, Lindsay and Elliott Law four steals each, and Cameron Taylor five blocked shots.

MOHIGANS HOLD OFF PESKY HUSKIES, 67-55 1/3/06
The Dominion Post
RACHEL — Marlan Robinson scored 19 points and added seven rebounds, as No. 4 Morgantown High remained perfect in the North Central Athletic Conference with a 67-55 victory over North Marion on Tuesday.
The Mohigans jumped out to a large lead, which eventually grew to 19 points, but the Huskies (2-4) kept coming back.
“We got the lead up there and then we had some turnovers and didn’t hit some shots and they started to make shots,” MHS coach Tom Yester said. “When they closed it up a little bit, we started to hit again when it counted most.”
Ryan Lindsay scored 12 points for the Mohigans (5-1) and J.T. Lewis added 10, but North Marion connected on seven 3-pointers for the game, while the Mohigans had only one.
“Our outside shooting wasn’t what it normally is for us,” Yester said.
John Hatfield added seven points, eight rebounds and four assists for MHS.

Mohigans boys cruise 12/30/05
The Dominion Post
PARKERSBURG — Marlan Robinson scored 23 points and Morgantown’s boys put up 52 points in the second half Friday to race past South Urban Academy (Columbus, Ohio), 78-50, in the Parkersburg South tournament.
MHS started strong, running out to a 17-4 lead after a quarter, but South Urban slipped back into by halftime, trailing, 26-16.
“First half, consolation game, nobody there, it was a pretty dull affair,” MHS coach Tom Yester said of the first half. “Neither team could hit the back side of a barn with a shotgun.
“The third and fourth quarters we looked like Morgantown High.”
Indeed. The Mohigans outscored South Urban, 52-34, over the final two periods to win going away. Jeff Lindsay added 14 points and J.T. Lewis 10 for MHS (4-1). Shawn Hamilton and Terale Clark led South Urban, with 12 each.
Robinson also contributed nine rebounds, Lewis eight and Cameron Taylor six, while John Hatfield had six assists and Lindsay five.
“You see a lot of 8s and 7s and 6s,” Yester said. “Everybody helping, and believe me, we need it.”

MOHIGAN BOYS (3-1) TAKE FIRST LOSS OF SEASON 12/29/05
PARKERSBURG — Austin O’Connell tallied 21 points and Dublin, Ohio, outscored Morgantown, 20-3, from the free-throw line to beat the Mohigans, 59-54, Thursday, in the Parkersburg South holiday boys’ basketball tournament.
“We gave one away,” said MHS coach Tom Yester, whose team absorbed its first loss of the year. “We should have beat them but we don’t get any foul shots, and they made 20 out of 24 from the foul line.”
In a close game almost all the way, Morgantown led, 29-26, at halftime. “We stretched it out to about eight in the third quarter, then the dumb coach substituted and we got killed about last two three minutes of the third,” Yester said, referring to himself. “Then we got back in the lead, then it flip-flopped most of the way, and down at the end [Dublin] made their foul shots.”
Dublin sank half of its attempts (19-38) from the field. Clark Crum scored 11 points, including 7-of-8 from the line.
Jeff Lindsay tallied 15, Marlan Robinson 11, and J.T. Lewis and Jamie Karraker nine each for the Mohigans, who play at 6 p.m. today.
