High School Athletes of the Week 3/6/07
Morgantown High’s Jay Fletcher scored 17 points, including a decisive three-point play in the fourth quarter, as the Mohigans beat University High in the Class AAA Region I, Section 2 championship game. MHS won, 57-49, after losing the first two games to UHS this season by 18 total points. MHS has won seven in a row and nine out of 10 and plays Wheeling Park tonight for the Region I championship.
Morgantown High’s Cynthia Fullard led four players in double figures with a game-high 20 points as the Mohigans defeated John Marshall, 73-40, to win the Class AAA Region I championship. MHS, winners of three straight and eight out of 10, advanced to the state tournament for the third consecutive year. Honor roll
Boys’ basketball
Clay-Battelle’s Tyler Barnette scored 12 points as the Cee-Bees lost to Hundred, 57-46, in the Class A Region III, Section 1 semifinal.
Morgantown’s J.T. Lewis and Taylor Dunn both scored 11 points as the Mohigans beat University.
Preston’s Chris Betler scored 12 points and made the gamewinning free throws with three seconds remaining as the Knights beat East Fairmont, 42-40, in the Class AAA Region III, Section 2 championship game. Josh Adams scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half. Steven Groves added nine points. Preston plays Fairmont for the Region III championship tonight.
Trinity’s Derek Meluzio and Drew Retton both averaged 11 points as the Warriors beat Lewis County and won the Class A Region III, Section 1 championship by beating Hundred, 46-40. Retton had 15 points against Lewis County and Meluzio had 15 against Hundred. Racy Ward averaged 10.5 points, including 14 aaginst Lewis County. Travis O’Neal averaged 10 points, including 16 against Lewis County. Trinity plays Notre Dame Thursday for the Region III championship.
University’s Jedd Gyorko scored 17 points as the Hawks lost to Morgantown. Ben Hewitt finished with 16 points and Ryan Nehlen added 10.
Girls’ basketball
Clay-Battelle’s Amy Wright scored 12 points as the Cee-Bees lost to Hundred, 49-44, in the Class A Region III, Section 1 championship game. Spencer Sigley added 10 points and Rachel Weber had nine.
