In December, the Mohigans’ lost to the Martinsburg High School 68-58. Less than two months later, the Mohigans were able to come back from a 13-point deficit to beat the Bulldogs 67-66 in overtime.
“There was no revenge. We recovered from a tough loss from University. We got hot in the 4th quarter. Have to give the kids credit for scrapping back,” Morgantown head coach Tom Yester said.
The Mohigans jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter, started by two free throws from senior forward J.T. Lewis. Morgantown sped their way to lead 18-12 at the end of the first quarter. Martinsburg fought back in the second quarter, but Morgantown held on to tie the game at 28, courtesy of a last second score from junior guard Zach Cooke.
In the second half, Martinsburg surged out to a 48-35 lead in the third quarter. Morgantown fought intensely back in the fourth to tie the game at 57 at the end of regulation, courtesy of a pair of free throws from Lewis with 22 seconds left.
In overtime, Martinsburg surged ahead, but Morgantown kept its poise to come back. Junior guard Taylor Dunn scored two free throws with 41 seconds remaining in overtime to put the Mohigans up 67-63.
“We have some clutch foul shooting. This is the best win of the year for us,” Yester said.
“[Martinsburg] is up there with some of the best.”
Morgantown hosts Preston Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
