Polar Bears pull upset, upend Morgantown

MORGANTOWN — The streak is over.

After all those losses, all those near misses, to Morgantown’s boys’ basketball team in recent years, Fairmont Senior finally has a win.

Thursday night, the Polar Bears handed the Mohigans their first North Central Athletic Conference defeat with a 53-47 road upset few, if anyone, saw coming.

Fairmont Senior (6-4, 4-1) hadn’t beaten Morgantown since 2003.

The Polar Bears started fast, turning around an early 4-2 first-period deficit with a 14-0 run to grab the lead for good.

Fairmont Senior led 13-4 after one, 22-17 at half and pushed its lead to nine points, 39-30, by the end of the third quarter.

Ty Garrison was the high scorer with 21 points. Kyle Raikes added 11, Corey Urse and Ronnie Retton seven.

Jordan Barnett led Morgantown (5-3, 4-1) with 11 points.

Fairmont Senior looks to continue its winning ways Tuesday at home against rival East Fairmont.
