MHS boys escape Huskies 2/5/08
The Dominion Post

Sam Runner scored 14 points and Morgantown High survived a cold shooting night to beat North Marion, 52-42, in boys’ basketball Thursday.
The Mohigans held just a 27-25 halftime lead, and coach Tom Yester wasn’t pleased.
“We put on the board ‘trap game.’ They must have listened to me,” he said. “The first half, we couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean. We were 11-for-31” shooting. “The second half we were 10-for-25, a little better but not much.
“The reason we won was we played fairly good defense the second half and rebounded well.”
Morgantown got some breathing room with a 17-7 edge in the third quarter.
“We had a chance to really put ‘em away, up 14 or 15,” Yester said. “We were just good enough to hold on at the end. We certainly didn’t get any points for style.”
Ryan Parsons (12 points) and Tyler Anderson (11) gave Parsons some support. Daniel DeVaul led the Huskies with 15 points. MHS plays again Tuesday, hosting Wheeling Park. The Mohigans JVs (11-0) also won, 46-35.

Mohigans nip Knights to tie for NCAC lead 1/31/09
The Dominion Post
Morgantown High’s Tyler Anderson sank a 4-footer at the buzzer Saturday to give the Mohigans a 47-45 victory against Preston High, at Kingwood, in a battle that left the teams tied for the NCAC lead.
In a game in which the teams were never separated by four points, Anderson and Taylor Runner scored 11 points apiece for the Mohigans, who have a 6-1 league record.
Kelvin Fike pumped in four 3-pointers and 18 points for the Knights, and T.J. Thompson added 17. James Crogan grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked five shots.
“It was pretty satisfying,” MHS coach Tom Yester said. “The game was a little slow on offense. We were fortunate. We had a lead with a couple minutes to go and missed our foul shots, which is kind of disturbing, but you never know what’s going to happen.”
Thompson scored to tied the game with 5.6 seconds to play.
“We drew up a play and Anderson made a very nice play at the end,” Yester said, adding that the Knights are “a nice team. T.J. Thompson is very good, and they have nice guards.
“Good things for us tonight: [only] nine turnovers. We had a good floor game. Arius Jackson had four assist and Cody Petitte had one assist but no turnovers, that was very important for us.”
Yester noted his team “still didn’t get the scoring we’d like to get, but we got good work out of [Chase] Wilson and [Ryan] Parsons and Sam Runner. It’s gonna be interesting to come back and play them again Tuesday,” at Morgantown.
Though his team lost, “We did some good things,” PHS coach Barry Sanders noted, “and we gotta play [the Mohigans] again.”

Riggins, Patriots thwart Morgantown comeback 1/9/09
Parkersburg South’s Mike Riggins drilled three 3-pointers on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter Friday, sinking any hopes of a Morgantown High comeback as well, as the Mohigans dropped a 75-59 decision on the road.
MHS had battled back from a 23-8 hole after a quarter to trail by just seven (52-45) before Riggins got hot from behind the arc. He made one more 3 in that sequence than the Mohigans managed all game.
“We just shot terribly from 3-point land [4-for-19],” MHS coach Tom Yester said, and not much better from the free-throw line (5-of-13). Meanwhile, the Patriots made 21 of 28 free throws.
“We didn’t give up,” noted Yester, whose team plays at Elkins tonight. “The kids fought hard, played hard. That, I was proud of.”
Riggins wound up with a game high 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as well. He got scoring help from Anthony Caplinger (13) and Alex Tracewell (11).
Ryan Parsons topped MHS with 11 points, and Sam Runner and Tyler Anderson added 10 each, with Anderson snaring eight rebounds. The MHS JVs won, 89-67, to go to 3-0. Luke Meador scored 26 points, Taylor Price 19, and Carlton Drake and Nathan Colombo 11 each.

Morgantown 73, East Fairmont 60 12/24/08
FAIRMONT — MOHIGANS OPEN WITH A WIN
The Morgantown Mohigans opened their season with a 73-60 victory over a scrappy East Fairmont team on Tuesday in Fairmont. MHS, replacing 7 seniors off last year’s state semifinal team, led throughout the contest and built a 20 point lead late in the third quarter and beginning of the fourth quarter. East nailed several three pointers in the closing minutes to close the gap. “Its always good to beat East at East, especially early in the year,” said Coach Yester. “We didn’t play very well, but were good enough to survive.”
Morgantown got 19 points from Sam Runner, and 16 points from Jordan Barnett. It had been incorrectly printed Dominion Post several times during the past week that MHS had lost to Capital in their first game of the season, but Morgantown officially opened their season with a victory and are 1-0. The Mohigans will host Parkersburg South next Minday at 8:15 as part of the Morgantown High Holiday Tournament. The girls will play at 6:15.
The Morgantown JVs opened their season at East with an 86-44 victory in a game that was a rout from tip off to finish. Eight players scored between 8 and 12 points a piece to lead MHS. The JV’s will be off until January 5 when they host North Marion at 5:45.
