Morgantown High rallied from four points down in the final minute to defeat Fairmont Senior, 57-56, on Thursday, in boys’ basketball.
Sam Runner tallied 16 points to pace the Mohigans (14-7), who trailed, 56-52, with 38 seconds to go when Taylor Simmons hit a 3-point shot to cut the deficit to one. The Mohigans pressed the Polar Bears into a turnover and Tyler Anderson sank his only basket of the game.
The Polar Bears missed a lastsecond shot that could have won it.
“We played pretty sound defense on that last miss,” MHS coach Tom Yester said.
MHS bolted to a 23-12 lead after a quarter but managed just eight points in the third as the Polar Bears mounted a comeback.
“We ran into a cold spot and then we missed I think six or seven free throws in in a row,” Yester said. “We’re usually better than that. But you gotta give Fairmont credit, they played a nice ballgame.” The Bears’ Kyle Raikes netted a game-high 23 points, Ty Garrison added 16 and Corey Urse 10.
MHS also showed some balance: Ryan Parsons added 12 points and Chase Wilson 11. Anderson pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Mohigans open section play at John Marshall on Wednesday. The MHS JVs won, 67-46, to finish 19-0. Nathan Colombo, Luke Meador, Taylor Price and Carlton Drake scored in double figures and Drake collected eight rebounds and four assists.
