You could call it an upset, but the Mohigans might beg to differ.

Class AAA No. 9 Morgantown (11-2) knocked off No. 2-ranked Logan (12-3) in convincing fashion, 74-59 in the Big Atlantic Classic at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center Friday night.

The Mohigans employed a powerful inside game to pull off the win, getting 18 points each from post players Taylor Price and Sam Runner.

“It’s a great win for us,” said Morgantown coach Tom Yester. “Logan is awfully good.”

Morgantown came out of the gates shooting with a hot hand, racing out to a 15-10 advantage in the first five minutes.

But Logan answered with a 12-7 run including 3s from guards Paul Williamson and Noah Cottrill to claim a 23-22 lead after one period.

The Wildcats’ rally continued into the second quarter with a 10-2 spurt to start with, as Logan took a 43-35 lead into the intermission.

The third quarter would be a different story, however.

Morgantown streaked out to a 51-46 lead on the strength of an 18-0 run.

Logan closed the third with six points, but made just 3 of 10 shots in that eight minute span.

The Wildcats’ drought continued in the fourth, as Logan failed to sink another basket in the entire quarter, going 0-for-12 from the field.

“Our defense really executed,” Yester said. “I thought we handled their pressure well, too. When we got behind, we didn’t panic.”

Jordan Barnett and Ryan Parsons added 11 each for Morgantown.

Cottrill led all scorers with 21 points, but connected on only 7-of-20 shots. Williamson contributed 14 while Deyonta Coleman chipped in with 15 fir the Wildcats.

Logan will play Capital today at 12:20 p.m.

Morgantown will face Greenbrier East at 5:30 p.m.
