The Morgantown High School Mohigans boys’ basketball team notched its second victory of the season Saturday night, blowing past the visiting Parkersburg South Patriots (1-2), 70-51.
The Mohigans got excellent performances from their stars, Dean Marshall and Nathan Adrian. Marshall ended the night with 14 points and Adrian enjoyed a doubledouble, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Morgantown started hot, sinking early 3-pointers and challenging Parkersburg South from the perimeter. The 6-foot-9 Adrian was primarily responsible.
“I started pretty fast and made a bunch of shots,” Adrian said. “I’ve always shot on the outside. It seems natural to me.”
MHS held a 15-3 lead after a quarter. That lead grew to 32-19 by the end of the first half. Parkersburg South had no answer for Morgantown’s sharp shooting.
MHS’s one blemish was the 12 fouls the team received during the first half. Parkersburg South came away with 10 points from free throws, with Wes Mitchem accounting for nine of those points.
“We put Wes Mitchem on the line about a hundred times. You can’t do that,” MHS coach Tom Yester said. “We’re inconsistent in execution. We played what you call yo-yo ball.”
Parkersburg South opened the third quarter with a 7-3 run and closed eight points behind the Mohigans. Just as things looked like they were heating up, the Mohigans’ Dean Marshall dropped three consecutive baskets in a 13-4 run to take back the momentum and bury the Patriots.
“I thought Dean was particularly effective at the particular time making three shots in a row,” Yester said. “Dean did his job. That is what you expect your guards to do.
“We’re a young team. We have five juniors out there,” Yester said. “They are still learning. We’ve got to learn from our mistakes and be able to execute when it counts.”
Morgantown will play at Brooke High on Monday.
