GLEN DALE — Everybody got into the game for the Mohigans, who survived a slowdown to beat the Monarchs in their final regular-season game.
The same two teams meets again Wednesday, at MHS, in the first round of sectionals.
“They were very, let’s say, deliberate,” MHS coach Tom Yester said of the Monarchs. “It was a 9-5 game at the quarter, we picked it up in the second and got things going a little bit. “It was not a thing of beauty but we survived.” Shaun Carden led MHS in scoring, with 10 points. Thomas Selby had six rebounds, Nicolas Colasante had four boards and three assist, and Dean Marshall added four assists and three steals. Evan Magers topped the Monarchs, with 10 points.

Travon Horton poured in 21 points and the Polar Bears went on a second-quarter spree that the Mohigans couldn’t overcome. FSHS held just a 20-18 lead after one quarter, but stretched it to 42-27 at halftime.
“We didn’t take care of business in the second quarter,” MHS head coach Tom Yester said. “They just blitzed us.”
Dean Marshall and Shawn Carden paced MHS (15-6) with 16 points apiece, and Carden pulled down seven rebounds.
The Mohigans made only three turnovers in the game, and cut the Polar Bears’ lead to five with four minutes remaining, but missed their next shot and had to scramble.
“They came down and scored, and we had to chase them a little bit and they are hard to chase,” Yester said. “We didn’t play hard enough. They played harder than we did, they were more committed, and that’s why they won the game.”
DeVonte Waites netted 18 points for FSHS, and Shaquille Washington added 13.
MHS travels to John Marshall on Friday for its regular-season finale, before playing the Monarchs again Monday, in the first round of sectionals.

BECKLEY — With its two starting forwards lost to injury, Morgantown High’s boys’ basketball team struggled in the second half Saturday and dropped a 63-31 decision to Woodrow Wilson, in the division championship game of the Big Atlantic Classic.
The Mohigans (13-3), playing without Nathan Adrian and Austin Agnew, trailed, 25-18, at halftime.
“We tried to make a little bit of a game of it in the second quarter,” MHS coach Tom Yester said, “then we came out in the third quarter and KABOOM! All we did was turn it over and had trouble scoring. The fourth quarter was just awful.”
Woodrow Wilson put up a 19-9 edge in the third and 19-4 in the fourth.
“They were bigger, stronger, faster,” Yester said. “They shot the ball well when they needed to.”
Thomas Selby led the Mohigans with 10 points. Dante Nabors had 25 for WWHS.
“You can see that was Selby’s best game, and Steven Solomon’s best game,.” Yester said. “Other than that, not too much good.”

PARKERSBURG — Morgantown High boys’ basketball coach Tom Yester had a simple theory about the key to beating No. 7 Parkersburg South, on Wednesday.
“If we keep them under 60 (points), we ought to win,” he said.
The fifth-ranked Mohigans did just that, holding the Patriots to 54 points in a 69-54 victory that boosted their record to 9-1.
“Our defense was pretty good,” Yester said. “They are a nice-shooting team.”
So was MHS on this night. The Mohigans shot 59.5 percent (25-of-42) from the field and 100 percent (15-of-15) from the free-throw line.
Nathan Adrian led MHS with a game-high 28 points to go along with 10 rebounds and three assists. Adrian made 10 of his 12 2-point attempts and went 8-for-8 from the line.
Dean Marshall finished with 15 points and five assists, while Nicolas Colasante contributed 11 points, two assists and no turnovers.
Wes Mitchem led Parkersburg South (8-3) with 15 points. Doug Dennis registered 12. MHS returns home at 7:30 p.m. Saturday to battle No. 1 Martinsburg.

‘What a game he had’: Colasante paces MHS boys 1/5/2013
The Dominion Post

WELLSBURG — Nicolas Colasante’s fourth-quarter free throws propelled Morgantown High past Brooke, 59-52, in boys’ basketball Saturday.
“What a game he had,” MHS head coach Tom Yester said. “Hopefully, that will give the Colasantes and the Saabs something to smile about during this tough time for their family.”
Nathan Adrian led the Mohigans with 23 points, while Colasante scored 17 and converted 10 of 13 free throws. His uncle, Tim Saab, died Tuesday.
The Mohigans had topped the Bruins, 68-58, at home, but stalled offensively in the first and third quarter Saturday, scoring only seven and 10 points, respectively.
“We had Austin (Agnew) and Dean (Marshall) in foul trouble, and (Mark) Johnson wasn’t scoring tonight, so too much fell on the shoulders of Adrian and Colasante,” Yester said.
After a back-and-forth first half, MHS took a fivepoint lead to the break and stretched it to 10 points in the fourth quarter. However, the Bruins got hot from behind the arc. They drained six 3s, making the score as close as two points.
“Thank goodness down the stretch we made most of our foul shots,” Yester said.
MHS hosts John Marshall at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Mohigans wins tight game against Washington, 50-48
The Dominion Post
MARTINSBURG — Morgantown High toughed it out against a quick Washington team to win their first game, 50-48, in the Martinsburg Classic Tournament on Friday.
Coach Tom Yester noted how the scoring rolled back and forth — the Mohigans would be up one quarter and then the gap would close the next one.
“We’d be up by 17 points, then they’d cut it down to six ... they really had us on our heels,” he said.
Washington led at halftime by five points. But then some key scoring by Mark Johnson and Nathan Adrian in the second half propelled Morgantown to the lead, Yester said, adding that the two scored the majority of their points during that half.
Nathan Adrian lead the Mohigans with a double-double, having 15 points and 11 rebounds. Other high scorers for MHS included Mark Johnson, who scored 11 points, andAustin Agnew who had 14 points.
Morgantown will face Martinsburg in the championship game at about 7:45 tonight.

Agnew tallies 20, Mohigans defeat Pittsburgh team
The Dominion Post
PITTSBURGH — Mark Johnson made a contested layup, drew a foul and converted the free-throw to put Morgantown High in a 60-60 tie with Pittsburgh Central Catholic with less than a minute to play Saturday.
Then Nathan Adrian, who made the assist to Johnson, hit a jumpshot with 8.5 seconds remaining to give the Mohigans a 62-60 victory.
The Vikings (3-1) missed a long 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Saturday afternoon’s Pittsburgh Showcase contest was back-and-forth all the way, but the Mohigans (2-0) rallied behind Austin Agnew’s career-high 20 points and Adrian’s 17.
“When we got the ball inside, Agnew and Adrian took care of it and scored well,” MHS head coach Tom Yester said. “A real nice effort for Agnew.”
Adrian grabbed 14 rebounds for a double-double, and made three steals. Dean Marshall contributed 10 points and eight rebounds, and Johnson had three assists.
The Mohigans struggled from behind the arc, going 0-for-9 on 3-pointers, but they shot 24-of-42 from the field.
After stretching a sixpoint first-quarter lead to a 10-point halftime edge, the Mohigans were ahead by 16 points early in the third quarter. Then the Vikings hit back-to-back 3-pointers.
“Going into the fourth quarter, we hit a cold spot, and they get hot and got the momentum,” Yester said. “They slowly but surely crawled back in the game, and changed pressure against us.”
The Vikings took a lead with under two minutes to play and got it up to five points before MHS responded.
“They are a good team, they are well-coached and they pressed beautifully,” Yester said. “But our big kids played really well, and Dean Marshall played well.
“It was a lot of work today, but I was very happy we were able to go up there and get a win away from home.”
