Morgantown High staged a fine comeback that wound up one point short Friday, as the Mohigans dropped a 61-60 boys’ basketball game to Wheeling Park, at the MHS gym.
Scottie Core netted 19 points and C.J. King 12 for MHS (9-9), which trailed, 19-10, after a quarter and still had a chance to win at the end.
“We had a walk called on us on our last possession,” with 3.6 seconds to play, MHS coach Tom Yester said. “It was close. We thought it was a foul, they thought it was a walk. We had a good chance.”
Still, it was “a very good high school game,” Ye s t e r said. “We didn’t shoot well from the foul line (11-of-18); neither did they (11-of-20). We made more 3s (7-2); they made more 2s (22-14).
“It was nip and tuck. I was proud of the effort, thought we had a good chance to win but came up short. I think we had only five turnovers, that’s the best of the year.”
Thomas Selby and Core had five rebounds each, and Core and Steven Solomon had three assists each.
Ryan Reinbeau led the Patriots, with 22 points.
The Mohigans hold Senior Night, against Fairmont Senior, at 7:30 p.m. today.
