Melko, Core lead Mohigans by Applemen

Kenzie Melko scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter Wednesday to help Morgantown High fend off Musselman, 63-54, in boys’ basketball at Morgantown’s Rowdy Center.
Scottie Core scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half as the Mohigans (12-9) built a four-point lead at intermission. The edge eventually reached nine, but the Applemen cut it to one, Mohigans coach Tom Yester said.
“We recovered, basically on strength of Melko in the fourth quarter, then we made our foul shots,” he said. “We were 6-for-6 when they had to foul.”
Antonio Morgano chipped in 11 points and five steals for Morgantown. Elvin McNally and Thomas Selby nabbed seven rebounds each and C.J. King had five.
“I was very happy,” Yester said. Musselman is “a ranked team (No. 9 this week), they beat us in overtime at their place.”
Trevon Wesco, who scored 20 points, and Tommy Hargroves, who had 19, both go about 6-foot-5, Yester said. “They have nice size. I was happy, we hung in there.
“Melko had his best night of the year, Morgano had best scoring night of year. The defense was respectable. We held them to 54 points, I’m happy with that.”
Morgantown next travels to play Parkersburg on Friday.
