Rowdie Society picking up steam for team- by Coach Hoffman
The Society was rowdie and boisterous on Friday night at the Armory. That was the best road crowd we have had in some time, as the boys couldn't hold off the hot shooting Polar Bears. West Side was 18-23 from the floor in the second half and definitely dominated the Varsity. They look like the best team in our region, for the first time in several years. They will have a lot of hurdles to get over before they can claim our regional championship. We didn't take it to them, and consequentely fell behind, having to play out of our game plan to catch up. I like the comeback our boys put on, it showed great character. But the Rowdy Society deserves the most credit, on this day. Our fans definitely were more rowdy. The video production by Mike Hedges is very good and copies will be sent home with players this week.
We will play host to Buckhannon on Wednesday and travel to Hawk High on Friday. Buckhannon has been playing all close games with their opponents over the past few weeks, but are losing. They are due a victory and we hope we aren't the victims. They were tied with West in the final quarter, before West routed them. It will be interesting to see how our team bounces back from this last stretch of tough games. Then on Friday we travel to U-High to take on a team that can make their whole season worthwhile if they can beat us. University has been struggling and can make up for all their losses with one victory over us. They will come and and play harder than any team we play, and will sell out for the good of the team. They are playing much better lately, and have the ability to upset us. Casey Jackson has turned into one of the better scorers in the conference and their cast of role players are tuning their machine. Coach Parsons will have his team confident and well prepared.
The JV's are 7-2 now, with five straight victories. They are playing hard defense as other teams are struggling to score. They are allowing the opponent only one shot per possession and running the break much better. This team has improved immensely over the past three weeks. If they keep it up, they will have a phenominal record.
The Freshman team won at East on Thursday evening as they blew out the Bees. Dusty Kerns hit some early perimeter shots which opoend up the inside. Its good to have Dusty back on track as he is a fine player, but has struggled some early this season. Nick Straface is really pounding the boards and Chad Callen is playing flawless point guard. Coach V's team is looking real good at 6-1.
A special thanks to the Vidovich family for having the Varsity team in their home this week for a team meal and some fun time away from basketball. The boys enjoy spending time together and this sort of thing helps bring them closer together. As you know, playing basketball involves more than just the sport. With our basketball program we want our parents to get to know each other's kids and support one another. So often I see parents that don't get along and this rubs off on the kids. This year our Parents have been supporting one another's kids and the that is why our kids are performing well. The three teams combined record is 21-6. A few of those losses can have been wins with a little bit of luck and or better execution. We could easily be 25-2.
At the mid point in the season, we are not completely satisfied, but with some hard work we could finish the season strong. The talent is here for our program to be one of the best in the state, but we need to keep trying to get better. We are happy with the players as we have had no problems and each player is trying to get better and help their team win. As long as this is the attitude we will continue to do well.
Parents are reminded to get their raffle tickets in this week.
