Mohigan Journal- May 2002
By Coach Hoffman
Its been about 6 weeks since I last wrote for the Mohigan web site. Where this site is not affiliated with the High School it is certainly a pleasure to have a forum to express my views and those of the coaching staff. We have received many congratulatory notes and I am constantly being approached by people in the public saying how much they enjoyed watching our team this year and what a positive set of role models we had. I felt the interviews that our players did were of very high quality and every player that was interviewed handled himself with class and certainly made us proud.
It was a great year and we are beginning to look to the future. All four seniors have offers to play basketball and three of them have made a decision. Bobby will go to Wesleyan, Ronnie chose Waynesburg over Alderson Brauddus, Nick chose Case Western over Vassar and Justin is narrowing his choices to a few junior colleges. This is certainly a great sign for Mohigan basketball as one of our goals is to get our players opportunities to play after high school. Not many teams in this country have four players from the same team that are offered college basketball scholarships. A lot of hard work by not only the players but by the parents and coaches has paid off. It will be rewarding day for us when these four set down together and sign their letters of intent. It shows all of the young Mohigans out there that if you work hard, keep your "nose clean", and stay loyal to your basketball program, great things can happen for you. The road was not always smooth for these guys, but their patience and loyalty paid off. I also would like to add that their parents have been very loyal as well, even when their kid wasn't getting any credit or even chances for that matter, they were always supportive of each other's kids and the coaches.
Next year's schedule is rounding into shape. Coach Yester is putting the final touches on it as I write. We will start the year with scrimmages with Keyser and George Washington. They will both be played at the MAC. Besides our usual conference schedule we will play Brooke and John Marshall home and away, and host Parkersburg South and Martinsburg. South Charleston will join us for our tournament along with Waynesburg and Laurel Highlands. Once again we will play some of the best competition in the state and we will hopefully be prepared for the late season.
The SSAC has moved us and University to a different region. We will play in the Brooke, John Marshall and Wheeling Park region. We will no longer play the Marion County champion. This will certainly be a new challenge for our basketball program.
Coach Jones is leaving the area in a few weeks as he will move back to the eastern panhandle after graduation. Coach Storm will be back for another season and will be joined by Coach Krantz. He is a senior sport management major at WVU and played ball at Grove City High School in Pennsylvania. These guys are very important to the success of our program and work very hard for our boys.
Geremy and Seth have both been offered football scholarships to WVU and Geremy has an offer from Marshall as well. We expect them to get more offers in time. We feel really blessed to have so many fine athletes in our program, but more importantly they are all outstanding people who work very hard for the success they receive. Keep up the hard work in the weightroom and go Mohigans!
