MORGANTOWN YOUTH BASKETBALL

DEC. 19, 2009

ITŐS A LONG SEASON, THANK GOODNESS!

By Jeff Hoffman

Well, by now you know that the Mohigan Boys Varsity Team suffered a tough defeat at the hands of the Preston Knights on Wednesday evening. On a night where better than a thousand fans filled the Rowdy Center, Preston brought their ŇAÓ game and deserve a lot of credit. The Knights won by a score of 57-39.

LetŐs get a few things straight. First, PHS is pretty good and unlike other teams in the area, Morgantown does not out work them. They play as much off-season ball as we do and hit the weight room as hard if not harder than our boys do. Secondly, we couldnŐt make a shot which is very uncharacteristic of this group and with as many as 21 wide open three pointers clanging in and out, Preston was very fortunate. It was an 8 point game in the middle of the fourth quarter when MHS sold out and had to start chasing, which is what you donŐt want to do to Preston High.

I would venture to say that this will be an eye opener for many of our players. They felt going in that they were the better team, and that spelled doom for them. They will learn to respect Preston. One weakness this team has, is its defense and it showed on Wednesday evening and despite a slow down by Preston, the Knights still managed to get nearly 60 points. Last yearŐs team may have lacked ability on the offensive end, but they were effective on defense and they defeated the same Preston team twice. MHS will have to go back to their defensive Principles and clean up their ability to keep the ball out of the paint. Coach Yester is the master coach in the area when it comes to defensive preparation and I imagine he will work his team day in and day out to make them better. The Mohigans would not have beaten too many teams on this night, but most importantly a good one like Preston.

Now MHS must prepare for East Fairmont who comes to the Rowdy Center on Tuesday evening. I bet the defense will be a lot better and the score a lot different or there will be some major changes.

JVŐs Rout Preston

The Morgantown JVŐs routed Preston by a score of 83-39    on Wednesday evening. Newcomer, Chris Glover had 16 points, including a thunderous two handed behind the head dunk. Also leading the scoring was 6Ő3 Connor Loudin and 6Ő7 Nathan Adrian with 16 points each. MHS outscored Preston 49-11 in the second half.
