MORGANTOWN YOUTH BASKETBALL
NEWS DECEMBER 8, 2009 |
VARSITY EVEN UP WITH GW It was
a match up between two of the best programs in the state on Saturday at the
Rowdy Center. It was cold outside and nearly as cold in the gym, both the
shooting and the temperature. With both teams not shooting well, they
struggled to get to halftime with a score of 22-22. Not something you will
see often this year from MHS or George Washington. Thankfully it was just a
scrimmage and Coach Yester played 15 players while the starters played about
6 minutes together in the first half and even less in the second half. ÒBoth
teams were playing good defense and we used a lot of players to see who could
do what,Ó said Yester. ÒIt was a good test.Ó The final score was MHS 65, GW
64. As is
the case in scrimmages, you do not look at score but team play and MHS moved
the ball well but had 27 turnovers in 42 minutes of action. That is an area
that will need to be addressed this week as the Mohigans prepare to travel to
Beckley and take on the always tough Flying Eagles. That scrimmage will begin
at noon on Saturday at Woodrow Wilson High School.. In the
JV game, the JVÕS many of which played multiple minutes in the Varsity
scrimmage saw MHS win by a score of 29-20 in two quarters. |
Frosh Open with 58-16 Win Morgantown.
WV The 9th
grade Mohigan team opened the season with a sluggish 58-16 win over an
outmanned John Marshall team on Saturday at the Rowdy Center. Jumping out to
a 20-2 lead with an attacking man to man, the Mohigans, showed their
dominance and led 29-5 at halftime. ÒI thought we played ok,Ó said Coach
White. ÒBut we have a lot of work to do.Ó It is still early and the Mohigans
will play better with more work. A 20-3 4th quarter put the score
out of reach for the Monarchs who are now 0-2 on the season after a season
opening loss to Wheeling Park by 15 points. Leading the team in scoring was Dean Marshall with 14
points. The stats are listed below. MHS will travel to Preston on Tuesday at
7:15. Their next home game will be on Thursday at the Rowdy Center at 7:15,
vs. Elkins. The Elkins game will be broadcast on mohiganbasketball.com. |

Harris are back) 2. Wheeling Park (Impressive last
year, many return) 3. Martinsburg (can you say RELOAD) 4. Preston (Thompson brothers not
all they have) 5. George Washington (Goard, Badger
and Coach Green) 6. Fairmont West (transfer and
football players join) 7. Beckley (always tough) 8. Cabell Midland (good run at end
of last year, many return) 9. Bridgeport (donÕt under estimate Axton) 10. Hedgesville (always in the mix) Morgantown not rated because of bias, but should be in
the top ten. University, with new transfer could be in top ten. |

AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS BY Jeff
Hoffman It was
a Òheart warmingÓ performance watching the Suncrest 8th grade team
put on a show against the West Fairmont Patriots the other night. I was
broadcasting the game for mohiganbasketball.com and really enjoyed the energy
by both the coaches and the players. The final score of 43-25 says it all.
Trailing 21-15 during the first few minutes of the second half, Andy Vac got
hot and scored 5 points in a row and assisted someone for the other one and
before you know it the Seals were off and running. West would go on to score
just 4 more points the rest of the game and was outscored by 24-0 over a nine
minute span during the 3rd and 4th quarters. What is
so enjoyable for me is the fact that I Have spent the better part of the last
6 months with these boys in the gym sometimes three nights a week and
sometimes 2 nights a week. Of course I spent the same time with many of the
South guys too, and I expect them to do well also. But, to beat a West
Fairmont team that beat this Suncrest group last year, twice, shows that hard
work pays off. The boys and their parents have worked hard and do not look
like the same group that struggled through last season. They should have some
fun this year with Coach Dalton as well. The veteran coach always brings the
best out of his players and his former players, really respect him. We are
lucky to have such a fine coach working with our kids. It shows when they get
to MHS with all the success that the Mohigans have had with the players he
has worked with. So
hopefully, these Seals will have good winter. I figure they will, as hard
work always pays off. Below is a
picture of the Suncrest 2-3 zone with Coach DaltonÕs help. |
