Schedule of Games For

This Week Announced

ItÕs that time of year, again. The time that we all anticipate more than any other. No, not Christmas, but basketball season. Though basketball is played year round in these parts, December marks the time of year that really counts. The teams have been selected and games scheduled. Three of our teams will open up this week and we hope to have coverage of all the games.

The Mohigan 9th graders will play two games with one on Friday and the other on Saturday.  On Friday they will travel to Bridgeport at 6:00 and on Saturday they will host John Marshall at 10:00 a.m.

The South 8th grade will travel to Kingwood for a 7:30 game on Thursday evening and on the same evening Suncrest 7th and 8th grade teams will host West Fairmont. Game times are 5:45 and 7:15 and the 8th grade game will be broadcast on www.mohiganbasketball.com.

We need someone to report scores and stats for the Middle school games. If you are interested, contact Coach Hoffman at jeffhoffman@mohiganbasketball.com.

MOHIGAN VARSITY/JV TO SCRIMMAGE GEORGE WASHINGTON

A look at the possible WV state championship can be seen at the Morgantown High this Saturday as George Washington from Charleston visits the Rowdy Center for a preseason scrimmage with the Mohigans. The scrimmage will begin around noon and will shuffle between quarters for both the Varsity and JV teams.

ÒGW is certainly one of the favorites to challenge for the state championship this year,Ó said Morgantown head coach Tom Yester. ÒThey have a 6Õ9 transfer from Mountain State Academy named Taquan Goard who can really play. Many feel he is a Division 1 recruit and it will take all we can do to handle him. It should be a good test for us. I have been very pleased with our boys and their effort so far this preseason. We will hold our own.Ó

Of course scrimmages are never to be taken too seriously as each coach will use many different combinations of players in the scrimmage, but it will give some indication of the strengths and weaknesses of the teams. The game will be broadcast at this site: http://mohiganbasketball.radiostream123.com

MOHIGAN VARSITY TEAM SET,

MAGIC ON EDGEWOOD STREET?

Since the year of 2000 the Mohigan basketball team has been in the state tournament seven times and five of those years, the program has advanced to the semifinals before losing one step short of the state championship game. This season, offers another opportunity to take the extra step. In the 80 some years that Morgantown High has been a school, it has been to the state tournament 18 times, but never have MHS won a state championship. Could this be the year for magic to happen?

ÒI think this team is very dangerous and has great chemistry,Ó said head coach Tom Yester. ÒThey have great chemistry and are all good kids. I am delighted with the way practice is going. These boys will just have to get tougher,Ó Yester added at a meeting with the parents on Sunday evening.

The schedule has been beefed up to make them tougher as the team plays a nationally rankled Franklin team from Columbus, Ohio and in a prestigious tournament in Beckley.

Leading the team this year will be a solid group of seniors. ÒThis group has been very committed and worked very hard to prepare for the season,Ó said Yester. ÒThey are going to be good leaders for us.Ó The vocal leader seems to be Ryan Parsons, the lanky 3 guard that averaged over 12 points per game as a starter during the second half of the season on last yearÕs conference championship team. Sam Runner (12ppg and 4.5 rebounds per game, last year), a 6Õ7 forward returns as well. Sam will present match up problems and will lead the team in blocked shots this year. Another match up disadvantage for other teams will be 6Õ3 Nathan Colombo. Nathan will play center and also has a Òsilky smoothÓ jump shot. But his biggest attribute is his strength and rebounding ability. Jordan Barnett returns for his senior season after starting many games last year. Jordan is known for his ability to score but never underestimate his defensive ability. Sharpshooter, Luke Meador will join Barnett in the back court. The two players as a combination play well together and have unlimited range.

The juniors of this team are pretty good group in their own rite. Led by Evan Berryhill at the point they are always dangerous for their opponents. Evan has a knack for hitting the open man and getting the team in its correct spots, but when it is necessary, Evan can be a high percentage shooter as well. Other guards in this group are TJ Elchuck, Carlton Drake, Chris Glover, Alex Watson and Michael Keffer. Watson and Glover come over to the basketball team after starting on the Mohigan football team. Both are athletic and strong and should help the Mohigans on both ends of the floor. ÒChris is one of the best athletes in the school and Alex has been a pleasant surprise,Ó said Coach Yester. Another good athlete and perhaps the best defender on the team is Carlton Drake. Carlton has also improved his jump shot and will play a key role on this team. TJ has always been a terrific shooter and will be counted on to supply depth at the 2 guard position. Michael is long and athletic. At 6Õ3 he can defend people of all abilities as well as run the court better than anyone in the program. Taylor Price, a 6Õ5 power forward returns and is expected to make a huge contribution to the team this year. He has gained 20 pounds of muscle and is dunking with ease. Taylor will play the three, the four and the five for the Mohigans. Ben Blemings, a 6Õ5 post player runs the floor well and has terrific post moves. Expect Ben to supply much needed depth to the Morgantown Boys team.

Coach Yester expects to use sophomore Sam Lusk as a back up point guard for the Varsity. Sammy, also off the Mohigan football team is a strong ball handler and good defender. Conner Loudin has been surprising many at practice so far this preseason. Conner is a 6Õ4 sophomore that can bang with the best of them.  A freshman, yes you heard it right, a freshman will have a chance to contribute this year as the talented Nathan Adrian brings his skills to the Mohigan program this year. The 6Õ7 freshman can play every position on the floor and will use this year to get acclimated to playing at the varsity level. Other sophomores on the team and making their contribution are point guard Tyler Filandino; two guard Andy Maloney, and forwards Nick Fulmer and Josh Childs.

The Mohigans look to be a diverse group and will challenge the best in the state this year. However to beat the best, chemistry will be the key for this experienced team. So letÕs sit back and watch these Mohigans perform their magic.
