MORGANTOWN 61 UNIVERSITY 51
Hawks let a big one ‘off the hook
Mohigans pull it out in 4th quarter
BY ERIC HANLON
The Dominion Post
University High boys’ basketball coach Paul Ingle probably said it best.
“We let them off the hook. We had the big one on the line and we let them off the hook.”
Hosting fourth-ranked Morgantown, University led for the majority of the game but let it slip away late, and lost, 61-51.
“A lot is lifted off our chests. We’re happy to get out of here,” MHS junior Sammy Lusk said. “Now we have to concentrate on the next one. This one is behind us, and a win is a win.”
Sparked by their 3-point shooting, the Hawks (4-10) tore off a 17-4 second-quarter run to take their first lead.
“We let them stay out there and shoot 3s, and you have to give them credit,” MHS head coach Tom Yester said. “I’m surprised they did it that well.”
UHS hit four 3s in the quarter — eight in the game. UHS junior Tyler Nagy led the Hawks with four 3-pointers and a team-high 16 points.
“That second quarter was great, and we had another good third quarter, but we went cold there in the fourth,” Ingle said. “And you have to give Morgantown some credit for that. They stepped it up on defense.”
Midway through the third quarter, the Hawks stretched their lead to 46-38 — their largest of the game. The Mohigans (11-1) then scored eight unanswered points to tie things up to start the fourth frame, and eventually reclaimed the lead, 50-49, with 5:05 remaining.
The UHS deficit never grew larger than three points until just over one minute to play. MHS put things out of reach with its solid freethrow shooting.
“At the end there, we stayed calm,” Lusk said. “We’ve been through some tough games. Maybe we were a little bit [nervous] considering it was our archrival, but we stayed calm and persevered.”
Lusk was the one constant for MHS, scoring 15 points and going 9-of-12 from the charity stripe.
“I just look for my opportunities and if I see that we need something to happen, I try to make it happen,” Lusk said. “Either by getting an assist, or scoring if I have to. Tonight it was just my night.”
Morgantown finished the game 1-of-10 from 3-point range and committed 12 firsthalf turnovers, but zero in the second half.
MHS senior Taylor Price and sophomore Nathan Adrian each scored 16 points. Price added nine rebounds.

Morgantown 79 Brooke 42 1/30/11
Ben Blemings and Taylor Price netted 14 points apiece and Sammy Lusk added 13 as the Mohigans (9-1) put the Bruins away with a 22-3 edge in the third quarter.
“Our first quarter wasn’t very good,” MHS coach Tom Yester said. “At the half we were up 12, with a bunch of guys in foul trouble. Then in the third we outscored them by 19 and took care of business.”
Price was 6-of-6 from the field, and he and Blemings each grabbed six rebounds. Evan Berryhill contributed six assists with no turnovers, and Carlton Drake helped with in two steals and three assists.
“Everybody else just chipped in off the bench,” said Yester, whose team plays host to Preston on Tuesday.
Shane Paesano netted 16 points for the Bruins.
Morgantown’s JVs won, 64-19, to go to 9-1. Nick Colasante had 10 points to pace the Mohigans.

PREP ROUNDUP
The Dominion Post
CHARLESTON — Morgantown High boys’basketball coach Tom Yester was looking for improvement from his team after a lackluster performance in Monday’s 56-48 loss, against Preston.
He found it Wednesday.
Michael Keffer finished with 19 points, five rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot to lead the Mohigans to a 66-58 victory, against South Charleston.
“Keffer had an awesome game,” Yester said. “He went 6-for-6 from the field and 1-for-2 from 3[-point range]. The last game, he struggled. Tonight, he brought it. I couldn’t be happier for the kid.”
Evan Berryhill and Nathan Adrian scored 10 points apiece for MHS (3-1). Adrian collected 13 rebounds and blocked three shots. Taylor Price added eight points despite being in early foul trouble. Ben Blemings scored seven points in a reserve role.
MHS went 9-for-11 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to hold the lead.
“The bottom line is, when you play these guys you have to compete because you’re playing against very good athletes,” Yester said. “We hung tough. We had a chance to fold and didn’t fold. I’m very pleased with the tenacity we played with.”
Pierria Henry led South Charleston (3-2) with 20 points.
